Nigeria are to be without almost their entire U17 first team
after a staggering 26 players failed the mandatory MRI screening which
tests players ages.
The ‘Super Eagles’ have an AFCON qualifier at home to Niger, this
Saturday with only two first teamers eligible to play. One official has
said
“It is a disaster. Virtually the first team the coaches have been working on have been disqualified. It’s a serious problem.”
Nigeria have a long history of success at U17 level, having lifted the U17 World Cup a record five times.
NFF officials have now started
trying to play the blame game to get to the bottom of how this farce has
been allowed to happen. The Confederation of African Football (CAF)
have moved swiftly to ensure a much more transparent management of the
MRI test by deploying independent doctors to the various
member-associations, with an Egyptian doctor overseeing the Nigerian
screening, last week.
